Fatal Wrong-Way Crash Claims Georgia Motorist Driver of pickup identified after predawn collision on Highway 162

Authorities have identified a motorist killed when another driver veered into oncoming traffic during the early morning hours on a rural Georgia highway.

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities have identified a motorist killed when another driver veered into oncoming traffic during the early morning hours on a rural Georgia highway. James Stanley Moore Sr., 59, died after a Ford Ranger traveling southbound crossed the centerline and struck his northbound Ford F-150 head-on, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The crash occurred around 4:20 a.m. on State Route 162 near County Line Road. Moore suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The driver of the Ford Ranger survived and was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.

Investigators have ruled out impairment as a contributing factor in the collision. "Drugs and alcohol were not a factor," GSP officials stated, though the investigation remains active.

The crash forced temporary closure of the highway while emergency crews worked the scene. State troopers have not indicated whether citations or charges are pending against the surviving driver.

Wrong-way collisions represent some of the deadliest crashes on Georgia roadways. According to federal transportation data, head-on impacts account for less than 3% of all accidents but result in disproportionately high fatality rates due to the combined force of both vehicles.

Highway 162 serves as a major connector route through Newton County, carrying commuter traffic between rural communities and metro Atlanta. The roadway features standard two-lane configuration with opposing traffic separated only by painted centerline markings. Anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact the Georgia State Patrol post in Conyers.
